What is Papaya (PawPaw)

Papaya is a tropical fruit that is known for its unique taste and health benefits. Also known as papaw or pawpaw, the papaya fruit is native to the West Africa and is also cultivated in many other parts of the world. It is a large, oblong-shaped fruit with a green or yellow skin that turns orange-yellow as it ripens. The flesh of the papaya is soft and juicy, with a sweet and musky flavor that is often described as a cross between a mango and a melon.

Papaya is a rich source of several essential nutrients, including vitamin C, vitamin A, folate, and potassium. It is also high in fiber and contains a group of digestive enzymes called papain, which can help break down proteins in the body. This makes papaya a great fruit for those looking to improve their digestive health and boost their immune system.

Health Benefits of Papaya

One of the most unique aspects of papaya is its ability to aid in digestion. The papain enzymes in papaya help to break down proteins in the digestive system, making it easier for the body to absorb and utilize nutrients from food. This can be particularly helpful for individuals who have difficulty digesting certain types of protein or suffer from conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

In addition to its digestive benefits, papaya is also a great source of antioxidants. Antioxidants are compounds that help to protect the body against damage from harmful molecules called free radicals. These molecules can contribute to the development of chronic diseases like cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. Papaya contains several antioxidants, including vitamin C, carotenoids, and flavonoids, which can help to reduce inflammation in the body and prevent cellular damage.

Vitamin C plays a vital role in the production of collagen, which is a protein that helps to keep the skin healthy and supple. It also helps to boost the immune system by stimulating the production of white blood cells, which are essential for fighting off infections and diseases.

Boiling the Papaya and Oranges

The Papaya and Oranges have different texture and different boiling times. The oranges are harder (if you leave on the orange peels) while the papayas are soft and mushy. You can make this recipe without the orange peels – which would give a lesser orange flavour jam.
